ISO5001 is an international standard created by the international organisation for standardization “ISO”. The standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, and improving an energy management system, whose aim to guide the industry to a continue real time assement of all the energy consumption indicators in order to target energy savings opportunities and thus improving the global energy performance of the company. In this introduction to the ISO 50001, we’re going to give a short overview of this norm and it’s benefits to a business.
What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 is a framework designed by the ISO to serve as a blueprint, or set of standardized strategies, to assist organizations in improving the ways they manage their energy and resources. ISO 50001 provides measurable benefits to both public and private organizations worldwide. Energy loss is inevitable for industries and so the high level of energy consumption. However, ever-increasing industrialization is contributing high level of energy consumption and therefore a systematic approach to reduce energy loss, energy consumption by establishing controls is the need of time with the help of implementing energy management system. The process of adopting ISO 50001 is highly beneficial for organizations. ISO 50001 will help these companies formalize accepted best practices and ensure accurate and standardized reporting.
Energy Management System
Energy Management System (EnMS) refers to a system used by an Organisation to manage its activities, product or services in such a way to minimize or eliminate the significant energy use. More explicitly, the ISO 50001 is that part of the overall management system regarding organizational structure, planning activities, job descriptions and responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources which is necessary for developing, implementing, reviewing and maintaining the organisation’s Energy policy and objectives and establish energy performance indicators.
Evidently, Energy Management System is not a Hi- Tech mechanism to address Energy issues of an organisation. Basically ISO 50001 energy management system is a management system consisting of three components namely:
- Design or development of elements of ENMS,
- Documentation,
- Implementation.
The ISO 50001 standard for energy management system is required to satisfy different stakeholder e.g. employees, shareholders, regulatory authorities, customers and general public as well. Also the ISO 50001 system is required to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations related to energy.
Why ISO 50001?
The ISO 50001 certification / registration process will only be applicable to significant energy use areas but cover all the departments for Energy management system. The company has to find out energy base line, make objectives and targets related to Energy issues for long run and achievement for the energy performance indicators. Below the reasons are given for ISO 50001 certifications.
– Provides a method for integrating energy efficiency into existing industrial management systems for continual improvement
– A to reduce energy use and improve operations, even if they are already complying with other ISO standards
– Applicable to commercial, institutional, and transportation sectors
– Systematic approach
– Improved Energy compliance
– Improved profitability and reduction in cost
– Reduction in energy cost
– Improved internal management
– Confidence with stakeholders
– Improved employee confidence / faith
– Market credibility / image
– Improved efficiency/plant capacity utilization.
